Starting pitcher Joe Ryan once again dazzled for Minnesota, striking out five and giving up four hits and one run over six innings of work. Buxton has had the misfortune of playing more than 100 games just once in his eight-year career, playing 140 games back in 2017. The Blue Jays are currently tied with the Mariners for the final Wild Card spot in the American League, so every game counts. His participation in the All-Star game, itself, makes me nervous. The only thing that can stop him from playing his way into contention is his own health. Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton has been on the cusp of super stardom for a few years now.
The rookie has anchored the pitching staff this season in a big way and the Twins are hoping he can continue to replicate that success throughout the year. That pain is still something that he and the Twins are trying to manage and while he's still dealt with reoccurring issues here and there, he's doing what he can to play. Even with the days off, Buxton’s 19 home runs have him tied for second in the majors with Mike Trout and Pete Alonso behind just Yankees slugger Aaron Judge. It stands to reason Buxton has no intention of comprising his health in any way whatsoever, particularly with what felt like a close call with his knee earlier this season. As the Twins try to find their way in a tightly contested AL Central, Buxton will be essential for the back half. Guerrero, who has been battling a wrist injury this season, cited that as the reason he doesn't want to take more hacks this year.
On Sunday, he hit his 11th home run of the year as the Twins defeated the Cleveland Guardians, 3-1. Ron Archer arrived in Arizona from his home in North Carolina on Friday night. We have to stop and acknowledge this before remembering that he planted that fastball into thethird deck at Target Field. The Twins certainly believe in his abilities and rewarded him with a seven year, $100 million extension before this season.

Smeltzer, Jose Miranda and Gary Sanchez converged in front of the Twins' dugout in pursuit of a popup, but all three let it drop. Miranda fielded a bunt too far off first base to get there in time, and Smeltzer didn't cover the bag quickly enough. The oft-injured outfielder pointed to last season as a step in the right direction, noting that his 92 games played were "the most I've played in I couldn't tell you how long." Byron Buxton is an All-Star for the first time in his career and only a portion of that honor was earned through his power at the plate. But admittedly, the Minnesota Twins’ star makes a pretty big chunk of his paycheck based on his boom potential.
He should still be hovering near that number now—despite the Twins starting the year 0-2. Buxton's fifth inning homer -- his 11th of the season -- secured him a spot in Twins lore.
